When one has bought an old motorcycle there is a wish to know that everything is alright, or get to know those things that are not. I started with the valve system.
Cylinder head for my 350. Ref 1

After taken away the petrol tank by disengaging the 2 long screws in front and back. Both with a distance hollow bar. Now you can take away the aluminum cast cover. Take care about the gasket. In the middle you see the valve lifters. The exhaust is controlled from the handlebar and will be used for controlling the position of the piston when starting engine. It shall be installed just as the picture shows. This one must always be adjusted after controlling the valves clearance. The clearance shall with cold engine for exhaust and inlet be 0.04 mm. Look in various data. Remember that when engine is warm the valve play will  increase. This is due to that the cylinder head is made of aluminum.  The push rods are of aluminum and are situated in pipes that have better cooling. They don't expand so much.

Here you see the exhaust valve rocker arm dismantled. Lubrication comes through the pipe to the left. The first picture of the cylinder and goes into the valve lifter axle from underside and continues through the hollowed axle. A threaded plug is also to be seen in the end. There are two of these axles one for inlet one for exhaust. They are alike and can be mounted at any place. In one of mine the oil outlets have bigger holes. The one with smaller outlet holes is probably for the inlet axle and the bigger is for exhaust axle (longer way). This oil channel goes further to the exhaust side in the cylinder head. I have chosen the one with bigger hole for inlet valve. The nut that holds the axle in place doesn't need any locking as it has fine thread.

The axle with bigger holes had some scored surface and I supposed that it might be needed more oil here.  The connection to exhaust is big enough. The cause may also be that someone earlier had made a new axle and given it too small oil holes. Oil is also coming up through the inner of the pushrods.

Spare part list for Sarolea 500 and 600. The same for 350.The rocker arm system on the exhaust side is only the rocker that differ.
The oil return is through the holes for pushrods and/or a pipe return in the lowest position of the cylinder head. Note also the milled cut area for locking screws which holds the axle in right position. Exhaust and inlet for oil are pointing downwards. Take care to have soft copper washers for the connections on both sides. They must not be too thick. Otherwise you don't  use fully thread length in the top head. Be also careful not to tight them too hard.

To the left a page from the spare part list for a 500 or 600  cc engine. My 350 looks just the same. The piston is smaller of course. Here you can se the rocker arms up to the right. Click on the picture to get an enlargement. You can also choose the headlines under printed papers to see all my spare parts paper.
