MG Midget 1962 was the car after the disaster buy of a Triumph Herald from Wohlin Cars. This MG was a nice car. It had excellent roadability and also a good engine, although the same as the BMC, but much more easy to work with. I was now working in a reparation workshop at the porcelain factory of Gustavsberg. Here I worked as a turner.
The car was so good that any changes in suspension was not needed. The only that was done was some trim to the engine. The engine was dismantled after one winter. I must say that its heating system was very good. Despite it's thin cabover I could driv in -10°. Ask my girl friend. Well to continue the crankshaft was sent to Agfeman in Stockholm and also the pistons and clutch to get it balanced. The valve lifters were lighted by me by milling notches with a cutter. I removed to much so I got a breakdown later. Instead I made the walls thinner.
The engine had already 2 SU carburettors so there were nothing more be done. I didn't change to a hotter camshaft either. Although I had to buy a new one after the breakdown with the lifters. The camshaft was bent. What is left was to lighten the car as much as possible. I must think upon that the car had to be used even private. It was wonderful to drive and it reved magnificent.
The car could match a trimmed Volvo Sport. Once at a driver's course at Skarpnäck Bo Elmhorn was one of the teachers. He was some of an icon for me. I drove like a God and got the car in right direction in one bend by lifting the throttle and slipped a little sideways. I had one Volvo PV Sport after me. He came nearer on the straights but I had better roadability in bends so he could not take over.
So we drove lap after lap till the last turn before crossing the finishing line. I went out of the curve on second gear, full reving, then it happened. One of the lifters was crashed by the camshaft side pressure and the engine went down on 3 cylinders and I finished second. It was bad luck but Bosse gave me highest mark for the good driving.
Here you can see the typical dash panel that equipped the cheaper BMC sport cars. It was good enough. The seat had good support sideways. The door was opened with a wire and there was no handle outside for opening. Side windows was part of the top. All this naturally was installed in later models.
I came over a so called Brookland pane. This was mounted at once. It was very cool. At that time all cars were left hand drive. Right hand drive cars got a lower price when changing to a new car. Racing was always clockwise so I hade ordered a right hand car. This picture from Karlskoga race track shows the simple scruteneering bridge. The new pit of today 2008, no one had yet in mind.
Once I went to a SSF race at Roskilde Ring. SSK had fixed transport to Helsingborg. From there we drove to the track. This was a nice track but my engine had not the power for the up and downs.
This picture shows a start at Karlskoga race track 1963. High trimmed sprites now showed up and were equipped with fatter tires. I had the standard tires.
This is the contract of my buying the Midget. When I 2003 bought a new MG ZR. It was just like history was tied together. On the Midget time petrol cost 58 öre/liter. This Midget was 1963 changed to a Lotus 15 at Wohlin Cars. The MG is one of the cars I like to own again, but so it is with all my old cars. There are only money and a suitable garage that are missing. Note that this contract is signed by my brother because I had no steady income.
